AaRCademy - Relatedness

AaRCademy Relatedness poster

One of the coolest ways to use ancient DNA to explore the past is to try to reconstruct the relationship between individuals and populations in the past. Relatedness methods are quite common in human studies, where a lot of times you know from the start that several samples come from the same period and region, so we can explore if they were buried together because they were related “by blood” or if something else happened. In animals, however, this approach is less common. Shorter generation times, less careful burials and for most species a low density of samples make direct relatedness dificult to test. That, however, doesn’t mean we can’t use some of these methods to study how our populations are related to one another. With that in mind, come and join us and Jolijn Erven (University College Dublin) on April 16th, 14:00 CET to learn more about all the ways we can explore palaeogenomic data to describe the relatedness between our samples.
